Bench Holdfasts
These are clamping devices used for woodworking. They are used with a thick wooden bench that has holes through it. Insert the stem in the hole and tap down on the angle to clamp the piece. Tap on the back of the angle to release it. These are extremely simple yet effective for holding your work. An essential tool for every fine craftsman. Custom sizes and shapes available. Cannon or Rifle Worms
During the Colonial and surrounding periods worms were spiraled or helical tools used to clean out the bore of firearms or cannons. They typically have one or two helical tines that act to grab debris from the barrel and they were fixed to the end of a ramrod or pole. They were often used to grasp a ball of course linen fibers called "tow". This ball of tow was then whetted and used to swab and scour the inside of the barrel clean. I have used this type of cleaning method on my firearm for years and prefer it over other methods.
I make worms for both rifles and cannons.
For cannons the worms are about 5"-6"long with a socket to receive a wooden handle that you provide, and the helix is slightly undersize to the diameter of your cannon bore. Please specify the diameter of the wooden rod and the bore diameter when ordering.
For rifles, I typically don't make them to the size of the bore but make them about 3/8" diameter or less. The wad of linen tow used when cleaning will make up the difference in the bore and also prevent the worm from scratching the barrel. They are about 3" long to give you extra length when grabbing on the ramrod during cleaning. Custom lengths are available on request. They screw on the end of your ramrod that typically either have an 8-32 or 10-32 thread size. Please specify thread size and desired length when ordering.
As an added feature, I make the rifle worms to be octagon, Octagon to round, or just round, to match the profile of your firearms barrel. Let me know what shape you would like.
